"Whether you are a beginner or seasoned artist, don't make the same mistakes many artists make. It's imperative to keep your skills sharp and know how to value your work.
1) Never Under Value Your Work
I start with an hourly rate, and price my work based on that. I take in to account my time, effort, and materials. Your hourly rate should reflect your skill level.
Price per hour × hours to complete painting, + materials, + travel time (if required for materials). Whether you are taking on a commission or selling a piece, never underestimate your work. You want to make sure you're making a profit on any work you're doing.
2) Believe in your Work
Your work cannot sell if you don't have faith in what you're doing. You're going to face lots of criticism and judgement, so be your own best friend.
3) Practice
You cannot improve unless you're willing to learn and practice. Make time to hone your skills because that is the only way you'll improve.
4) Invest in Yourself
Take workshops and learn from skilled professionals. If you want to be great, then you need to invest in your skills.
5) Make Prints on Demand
I made the mistake of making a print of each piece I completed, assuming someone would buy it. Prints are an excellent alternative, if someone cannot purchase an original. However, you should only invest money in prints for your popular pieces, and even then, keep it to a limited number and keep the prints small.
For example: Whatever it costs to print, double it, then + tax. Example: $20 x 2 is $40, then plus tax(13%), so $40 x 1.13 = cost of your print.
Happy painting!
