While this is a slight deviation from my usual subject matter, I feel compelled to write about a few valuable insights I have learned from my ninety-seven-year-old friend. These are gentle reminders about finding joy in the simple moments and I'd like to share them with you.

Enjoy the Moment

Who knew a little bit of ice cream could make someone's day? Well, that may be an overstatement, as it isn't much but it is something to enjoy in the moment. Every day we go out, I give my friend a new flavour to try. Even though he may not remember trying it, I feel like he's finding a new way to enjoy something he's already done. There's something wonderful about seeing someone genuinely enjoy such a simple thing. It helps me understand, there really is beauty in every day moments.

Learn to Laugh

I'm finding ways to laugh about everyday problems, as they really don't mean much in the long run. All that happened in my life are now distant memories, so why bother holding on to them at all? I can't control everything and if we can approach life with a sense of humour, I think we can take on anything with grace.

Let it Go

My friend may not remember our conversations, but each day feels brand new to him. I can't be upset or angry when he forgets, there's just no point. When I hang out with him, we can laugh and talk about anything. He doesn't have the luxury of remembering what happened yesterday but I do. It has taught me how to let things go. I can't control other people but I also don't have to carry the burden of past hurt and regret and let every day be a chance to start again.

Don't Take People for Granted

Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Why do we waste time on petty squabbles? I'm learning, all the battles we fight are often in vain and all we are left with is wasted time. I guess my question is this, “Why does it even matter?” Make peace and mend fences while you can.

Have some Ice Cream

Why waste time? Do what makes you happy and find a way to bring joy in to your life. Take a lesson from my friend and have some ice cream. Try a new flavour from time to time and let yourself enjoy the heck out of it. Who knows? It might just make your day too.
