Movement for Life: Misconceptions

Over the years I've heard a lot of misconceptions about exercise. These false ideas can discourage people from participating. It usually comes from those who have pre-conceived ideas or who’ve had bad experiences in the past. It can also stem from a lack of self confidence in the gym. We ran a gym for 23 years and I’d like to share the facts about what it's really like.
No One is Looking at You
This is not a physical appearance issue, many people have the underlying fear of being looked at. When someone tells me, “Oh, I don’t want people staring at me.” It usually comes from a lack of knowledge about the gyms' interpersonal dynamics and lack of self confidence, stimulating an underlying sense of intimidation. Here’s the thing, everyone feels that way! As your knowledge improves, so will your self confidence. People are at the gym because they are making time to look after themselves.
Every Body is Perfect… Not
There is s silly notion people in the gym are only young and perfect. Quite the opposite is true! No one has the perfect anything, let alone a perfect body. Our clientele were just average, every day people of all shapes and sizes. All they really want is to feel better.
I’m not a gym person
You don’t have to be an athlete to participate. A gym is not exclusive to a certain kind of person. I’ve worked with athletes and non-athletes over the years. Most of the people I work with want to improve their quality of life. Every person has the ability to exercise, no matter their age or body type.
A gym is a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It is a source of community and encouragement for those trying to help themselves. Don’t take my word for it, find out for yourself!
