Movement for Life - Following Through

What is a resolution? According to Google, “A firm decision to do or not do something.” It got me thinking about the reality of resolutions and why people wait for a New Year to start. If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’ll know who said this, “Do or do not. There is no try.” A resolution really means nothing if you’re not following through.
More Than Words
The word itself reminds me of other words I dislike such as, “diet” which I never ever use. It is a buzzword people really don’t understand and often has negative connotations. When you think of the word, “resolution” or “diet” what images come to mind? In my experience, people approach resolutions with an ambitious mind set. The reality is people cannot keep up because they have unrealistic expectations. It feels like an impossible mountain to climb and people quit. There’s never a good time to change your life and it’s going to require more than words to make it happen.
Let’s Get Real
You cannot undue a lifetime of poor lifestyle habits in three months. Making one small decision every day to help yourself is doable. Getting to the gym five days a week, while certainly ambitious, is unrealistic to those just starting out. Make your goals achievable and take it one day at a time. Depending on your fitness level, if you can manage 20 to 30 minutes, two to three days a week then that’s where you start. Stay consistent with the same time of day. For example: On Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m., that is your exercise time. Being active simply means whatever gets your body moving and something YOU love to do.
Set yourself up for success by making an achievable plan.
