One of my favourite thoughts is from Dr. Wayne Dyer. He said, “Worry and regret are useless emotions.” Why? No amount of worry can ever change what’s been and gone.

One of our clients told us, “My friend is so worried about what’s happening in the world that she can’t sleep.” Does this sound familiar to you? Maybe you’re a worrier or you know someone who is. Did you know it can take a toll on your physical well-being?

Taken from an article, found on https://batonrougeclinic.com/news-education/what-happens-when-you-worry-too-much, here are some noticeable effects of worry on physical health:

  • Cardiovascular Issues: Increased heart rate and blood pressure, potentially leading to heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

  • Digestive Problems: Irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and other digestive issues.

  • Musculoskeletal Issues: Muscle tension, headaches, migraines, and chronic pain.

  • Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, leading to insomnia.

  • Immune System Weakening: Chronic stress can suppress the immune system, making you more susceptible to illness.

  • Other Effects: Fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and even weight gain.

So how does one turn off the worry in a hurry? I can only speak from personal experience and the best advice I got was from my mom, “Take it one day at a time and don’t worry about the rest.”

I also try to change my inner dialogue. I challenge myself to find a constructive solution to a problem, instead of dwelling on it uneasily.

In keeping, exercise is a big part of my daily routine, and it helps me focus my energy on something positive. Additionally, I’ve been to counsellors in the past, and I found it helpful to sort out my thoughts. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Do what you need to do to be healthy.
