I recently started reading “100 Rules for Living to 100” by Dick Van Dyke. Many older individuals find it difficult to maintain a positive attitude as they age, and yet it is so crucial. I definitely recommend this book!
Being Stubbornly Optimistic
What gets you out of bed in the morning? “I’ve made it to one hundred, in no small part, because I have stubbornly refused to give in to the bad stuff in life: failures and defeats, personal losses, loneliness and bitterness, the physical and emotional pains of aging. That stuff is real, but I have not let it define me.”
Do What Gives You Joy
He speaks of looking back to when he was little. Comedy and the joy of entertaining people started pretty young. He asks, “What is your first memory of doing what you love?” Maybe you loved drawing, singing, or dancing?
Keeping Your Mind and Body Active
It’s not surprising to know that Dick goes to the gym three times a week! He actively engages in activities that challenge his mind, such as crossword puzzles or, in his case, a comedy skit. What can you do to keep physically and mentally active?
A Sense of Humour
“The things that have kept my life joyful and fulfilling are pretty simple: romance, doing what I love, and a whole lot of laughter.” He describes life as being “one big playground” and being in a “full-on bear hug with the experience of living.”
There’s more to the book, of course, but I believe it is an excellent message! If you need a shot of positivity in your life, this book will do it.
