It's pretty sad when people cannot even cross the street without looking at their phone. I've been listening to an audiobook, on Spotify, regarding, how to “stop people pleasing and set boundaries" by Marieme Seck. It is about setting priorities, achieving goals and how to become more focused in life. In an age where we are so connected with everything else, we are terribly disconnected with ourselves.

You Are the Product

Social media is designed to keep you addicted, in fact, they count on it. The algorthim targets your desires and insecurities, by sending targeted ads and content which is one example of such marketing ploys. The message is, "When you feel the need to fit in, just buy my product and you'll have a good life." Someone is making money but it isn't you. Remember, "You are not the customer, you are the product." This saying has resonated with me, ever since I heard it. The more you watch, the more someone else benefits.

Let's Get Real

We live in a highly addicted society. We are addicted to validation, likes, followers and notifications. Congratulations! You are the product of the social media age. This also translates into real life, so instead of prioritizing your wellness, you're more interested in the latest online trend. You're spending more time sitting, watching and "liking" some strangers feed. All this stuff you read online is designed to keep you hooked!

Connect with Yourself

This is an easy one people! Spend less time online and more time in the real world. Engage with people and activities which feed your soul. When is the last time you've engaged creatively? When is the last time you've had a face to face conversation with someone? When is the last time you've crossed the street without looking at your phone? I dare you to go one day without using your phone.

Move your body

Go outside in nature, whether its going for a walk or bike ride. It has a rejuvenating effect on body and mind. Exercise releases dopamine. All that bad news you're reading online, turn it off and do something else. Take care of what matters most, your health. We'll dive in to part 2 next time.
