It’s been a busy week for celebrations. Tour leader Lynn Roach-Bernier celebrated at home, although often she is tripping around the world. Birthday Greetings also to Michelle Harrison, who spends much time traveling around the world to exotic sites with her mother, Yvonne. Happy birthday also to Keith Doucette, who is taking great delight in his grandsons. I think his mother’s Wilma, would also be so happy to see them if she were here! One of our premier naturalists, James Kamstra, also had a birthday. I hope he saw lots of interesting snakes that day, maybe a few birds too, as they prep for migration! Our friend Norma Scott had her birthday several weeks ago now, but I am told, besides a family gathering, she was feted by her lawn bowling companions with a surprise party!
Not only were there birthdays, but anniversaries as well. Congrats to Philip and Jennifer Wilson on their 40th anniversary. Jennifer is busy singing in choirs, and I love to hear her on the harp . They both enjoy their growing number of grandchildren. I have known both these youngsters since they were kids themselves! Rev. Glenn and Lorna Ball also enjoyed their 40th anniversary. They were married in Knox Chapel at U of T, and he has recently retired as minister at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian in Brandon, Manitoba, but their celebration was held in the magnificent St. Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral! Karyn and Ryan Tindall took time out from their busy lives at the farm and market to celebrate their 49th anniversary, 31 years of which they have been married. With their two daughters, they are really making their mark on Farmers' Markets! And not to miss another anniversary, this time a first-time one, celebrated by Trevor Cox and his lovely wife, Jamie Elizabeth . May they see many more! If you see Heidi or Earle Lockerby on Friday, wish them a happy 61st anniversary!
Sympathies from the community go out to the Longhurst family of Zephyr on the passing of Hazel (Longhurst) Andryechen, who was born and raised in Zephyr. Our deepest sympathies to the many family and friends of Helen Herrema, who passed away last Sunday. Her Celebration of life was held at the new Leaskdale church, and there were very few vacant seats as Helen was one of those marvellous people who were active in so many parts of the community. In earlier days, she was involved in coaching sports, she loved gardening, she belonged to many community organizations, and no doubt was involved while husband Gary, and later son Howie, were involved in politics. No matter where you met her, she always had a smile and a genuine greeting. She will be greatly missed! The service was conducted by Rev. Andrew Allison, while the beautiful music was by Richard Watson!
Zephyr Scott Lions held their fun day and BBQ, along with the Community Association, last Saturday, and they count it a success as they raised $500 for the Scott Central Healthy Snacks Programme! Way to go, guys and gals! There was a massive BBQ and fun day on the 5th earlier in the week as the Jennifer Ashleigh Children’s Charity in honour of those patients and families who have received help from them over the last 30 years or so. The Charity was started by Norm Clements, who I think recently was given a King Charles medal for his actions!
Lots of activities are coming up at the Uxbridge Scott Museum, along with the Uxbridge Scott Historical Society. The past Herb Fest was organized by this year's summer student, Brooklyn Webb, who did a great job in naming each herb and its uses. Brooklyn is a third-year student of Western U, specializing in BA Kinesiology! Brooklyn is not related to our local Webb families, but I think she probably feels like a local now! This coming Tuesday, the Horseshoe Club will be holding its championship night. There are two trophies to be won, the Kirvan Cup and the Ken and Irene Watts Trophy. Games start at 6 p.m. Join the competition! There are several talks beginning September 12th at 6 p.m., when Chef Alex will discuss “The Taste of Heritage.” On September 8th, Cyndie Jacobs, well known for her music, will also talk about History and Heritage, although an original note I saw said “Winnie the Poo”. On October 13th, there will be a Cozy Witchcraft Workshop, and on October 16th, Walter Campbell will be the guest speaker. Walter is renowned for his beautiful paintings of century homes, as well as his music! And finally, Fright Night on October 25th. Check out the website and best to reserve some of these! There will be an Open House at the Seniors Centre on Friday, September 3rd, for seniors who would like to join the Seniors Club, whether for Lunches or the many activities that go on each week, sports, cards, exercise, dance, music, etc. It runs from 1 to 3 p.m., so come join the fun!
Last Friday at the Foster well well-known Chris Saunders and three companions brought some great music to a large and appreciative audience. Chris alternated between guitars, but both ladies and other gentlemen sang; there was flute music and mouth organ music, a great combination. Next week, the performer is Madison Holder with the theme “Musical Theatre” to finish the month. Still September to anticipate while the saga of the parking goes on!
Church services for the Sandford Zephyr Congregation will resume on September 7th.
