Lewis Family Threshing Day Celebrates Farming Heritage

UXBRIDGE: The sights and sounds of Ontario's agricultural past came to life on Sunday, July 19, as visitors gathered at the Lewis Family farm for the annual Lewis Family Threshing Day.

The popular event showcased antique farm equipment, vintage tractors and traditional farming demonstrations, giving families an opportunity to experience how crops were harvested and processed before modern machinery transformed agriculture.

One of the highlights included horse-drawn plowing demonstrations, offering a glimpse into the demanding work early settlers faced. When pioneers ploughed with a single horse and plow, they could typically turn over just one acre of land in an entire day. To manage the strenuous work, many farmers would switch horses halfway through the day, allowing both animals time to rest.

Throughout the day, visitors watched threshing demonstrations, explored restored equipment and spoke with volunteers eager to share stories and knowledge of Ontario's farming history. The annual event continues to preserve the traditions and skills that helped shape rural communities while offering an educational experience for all ages.
