We are still waiting for it- Spring, that is! Yes, we have had some beautiful-looking days, but not the warmth we are craving. Our farmer friends and relatives are moving ahead with planting and dodging raindrops as they do. Since most tractors now sport fancy cabs, I guess they don’t have to worry much about getting wet unless they have to get out and adjust the machinery. Crops seeded a couple of weeks ago seem to be coming up as normal. Talk about rain. The other day, we had a flash flood. It had been drizzly much of the morning, but fortunately, we got in the house before it came, so dense you couldn’t see through. Fortunately, it didn’t last long, but a whole lot of water fell in a very short time! One advantage of the cooler weather is that spring flowers last longer. I have only had one walkabout the yard, but fortunately, I can see many from the house, where I am still more or less confined after my surgery. Not the time of year I would have picked, but I didn’t get a choice. Still, I guess things will get done, with a little help from my friends!
Various groups are getting active again. The Horticultural Group will meet on May 13th at the Seniors. There will be a flower show and a mini speaker, who I believe is Barb Pratt! The main speaker is Tod O’Brien, talking about creating a food forest. Meeting opens at 7:15 p.m., but if bringing flowers must be there earlier! Incidentally, I noticed one of the members working diligently to clean up the grass by the Cenotaph, one of the locations the group monitors. The Genealogy Group will meet downstairs in the library on the 21st. I expect members will also be able to join via Zoom. North Durham Nature will meet on May 26th, but check websites for confirmation of time and place. The Zephyr Scott Lions are preparing for their Spring Seasonal Market. There are still stalls available if you want to sell something. Contact them to confirm. There will be a BBQ and games for the kids. The date is May 30th at the Zephyr Hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The usual donations are appreciated. Horseshoe pitching has begun at the museum every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. Both men and women are invited to participate. The fee is $30, but it also allows you to attend any talks at the museum for free. Speaking of which, there is a great one coming up on May 20th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., given by Dr. Amy Barron, PhD! Amy has been here several times before, but it has been awhile! Here topic is “Cabinets and Curiosity to Controversies”,the history of museums!
Best wishes to Gord and Karen Marharage Shreve on their 28th anniversary! Birthday greetings to a great car salesman, Mike Kelland! I am sure there are several more, but I am lacking this week. Best wishes to all those celebrating and especially to all moms on their special day!
