SCUGOG: With winter settling in, along the shores of Lake Scugog, a favourite seasonal attraction is once again welcoming skaters of all ages. Lakefront Skate, in Port Perry, is officially open, offering free outdoor skating seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., at Joe Fowler North Diamond, located next to Palmer Park.

The rink, part of the Lakefront Skate and Market area, is designed to be a fun, inclusive space, where residents and visitors can enjoy the outdoors during the colder months. Since opening, the ice has already seen steady traffic from families, couples and groups of friends looking to make the most of winter along the waterfront.

“This is one of those things which really brings people together,” said, Port Perry resident, Stephanie Lee, who visited the rink with her children shortly after it opened. “It’s affordable, it’s active, and it gives families something special to do, right in the heart of town.”

Organizers say, the primary goal of Lakefront Skate is simple, having fun. But, safety remains a top priority. Skaters are reminded to follow posted rink rules, to ensure everyone can enjoy the ice safely. Hockey sticks, pucks and nets are not permitted, and aggressive skating is prohibited. Helmets are strongly encouraged, especially for younger skaters, and children should be supervised at all times.

Additional rules include: no food or beverages on the ice, no skating during maintenance periods, and no strollers on the ice, although training aids are permitted. Alcohol consumption is not allowed in the area, and skates must be worn on the ice and kept on mats when off the surface.

“The rules are really about making sure everyone feels comfortable and safe out there,” said Dave Hickson, who regularly skates in the evenings. “It’s not a hockey rink, it’s a community space, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable.”

Visitors are also asked to respect the space, by using garbage receptacles and refraining from fighting, spitting or using washrooms while wearing skates.

For many residents, the opening of Lakefront Skate signals more than just the return of outdoor skating, it’s a reminder of the simple pleasures of winter in Port Perry.

“There’s something special about skating by the lake under the lights,” Ms. Lee added. “It’s become part of our winter tradition.” Lakefront Skate is open daily, weather permitting. Skaters are encouraged to check conditions before heading out and to dress warmly for an enjoyable experience on the ice.
