The Artist Within: Writing A Children's Book

by Lauren Walker
As some of you know, I am a local visual artist. I've never really spoken about my other passion... writing! While it may be apparent in my weekly articles, I started writing when I was a kid. My first poem was written in grade five and over the years I've published online and have spent many years writing for the The Standard News. My next adventure allows me to marry two things I love the most. I look forward to sharing my journey to writing and illustrating my very first children's book.
What is it about?
I am a personal trainer and work with many clients over 65. About a month ago, my client told me the story of how she bought a pair of sparkly boots for her five year old granddaughter. I use the basis of her stories as the foundation for my book. I promised her the first signed copy of the book and I'm keen to stick to that. I'm currently writing the manuscript for "The Adventures of Sparkly Boots: Biggest. Puddle. Ever." I couldn't get the idea out of my brain. The story is going to centre around my main character who is five years old and always has her sparkly boots on. It will share the adventures she has with her grandma. I aim aiming to release the book in the fall of 2027.
How do I start?
First of all, I must give thanks to my friend Michelle who is a published author. She is mentoring me through the process and asked some very key questions:
1) What is it about?
2) What age is it targeted to?
3) Is it meant to be read by a child or read to the child?
4) What will your layout look like?
5) How many illustrations do you want?
6) Is this an individual book or series?
7) Style of illustration?
Writing is the easy part! I've already written several stories but this particular idea is set in the fall. I had to adapt my initial idea to co-inside with an autumn release. The goal is to write a thirty page manuscript by December 1st. I also have to figure out the cover art and overall aesthetic.
Realistic Expectations
It takes time to make a dream come to fruition. I have a vision of what I want it to look like. I'm giving myself a year to put it all together. As I go, I look forward to sharing my journey and I hope it inspires you to go after your goals.
Here's to chasing dreams...
Happy Writing
