SCUGOG: Knowing how to respond in a medical emergency could save a life, and local residents will have two opportunities, this November, to learn potentially life-saving skills, at no cost.

Two free CPR-C training sessions, approved by Scugog council and delivered by St. John Ambulance, are being offered to township residents aged 18 and older.

“This is an awesome opportunity to learn these skills,” said Lisa B., of Scugog Island. “I signed up with a friend, for the Blackstock course, as soon as I heard.”

The four-hour courses will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the first scheduled for Saturday, November 7th, at the Scugog Community Recreation Centre, located at 1655 Reach St, in Port Perry. A second session will take place on Saturday, November 14th, at the Blackstock Recreation Complex, located at 3340 Church St.

Each session has a maximum capacity of 18 participants, spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The training is designed to give participants the knowledge and confidence to respond safely and effectively when someone needs emergency assistance.

Participants will learn how to manage an emergency scene, recognize the signs of a heart attack, and respond when someone stops breathing. The CPR-C course also covers resuscitation techniques for adults, children, and infants, as well as two-rescuer CPR.

Although CPR is a skill which can be learned, knowing what to do in a high-stress situation can be challenging. The training offers residents an opportunity to practise essential techniques and become better prepared to help when every second counts.

Residents can register through the Adults and Older Adults section of the Township of Scugog’s website, at scugog.ca/parks-recreation-culture/recreation/adults-and-older-adults/.

With only 18 spaces available in each session, those interested in participating are encouraged to register early.
