SCUGOG: Scugog councillors got an update on how the annual Candlelight Walk and Tree lighting ceremony, being held in Port Perry, has grown this year.

At a meeting on Monday, November 20th, Karey Anne Large, Executive Director of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce presented councillors with information on this year’s event, which is set to be held this Friday, November 24th.

“This year’s event has grown immensely from what we did last year, and from what I believe and have been told, as well as what has been done in past years,” Ms. Large said.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with a host of holiday themed attractions for participants.

“This year’s event will kickoff in Palmer Park where guests will be treated to many activities. Our event will kickoff with our emcee Jonathan Van Bilsen, who will be joined by our Town Crier, as well as our new Poet Laureate, will be on hand to do a reading. Once we get those formalities out of the way, guests will then wander the park and find activities such as Grinch pictures at the gazebo, and you will also see our friends from the Scugog Fire Department. They will be there to help educate everybody on fire safety and to man our fire bowls,” Ms. Large explained.

Other activities include a treat station, craft station, indoor farmer’s market and holiday themed games.

The Chamber will be looking for donations from anyone looking to get a candle for the event, and then the walk will begin and travel through downtown Port Perry. Santa Claus will also be on hand to watch the trees in the town officially twinkle with Christmas lights.

“This year, you guys are far exceeding any candlelight walk we’ve ever had and you’ve encompassed every aspect,” Ward 2 Councillor Janna Guido said. “It is going to be incredible.”
