Nurse Next Door celebrates new location in Uxbridge

Nurse Next Door announced its newest franchise location to service Uxbridge, Port Perry, Georgina, Innisfil, and Yorkdale, Ontario. The award-winning senior homecare provider is the first location for the city, and long-term resident and franchise owners, Rajwinder and Mandeep Dhaliwal are bringing "Happier Aging" to the community.

After more than 15 years of experience in the healthcare system, Ms. Dhaliwal was looking for a new way to support their community and to bring happiness to senior residents. When she found Nurse Next Door, it was a perfect match.

"I was inspired to start my franchise because I was drawn to the Happier Aging approach to senior care. Our goal, as an organization, is to keep our seniors living at home while also getting them back to doing the things they love, by exploring and discovering new experiences together.

Studies suggest, 50 percent of our happiness comes from our genetics and 10 percent from circumstances which we can't control, but 40 percent is self-made. Forty percent of self-made happiness comes from deliberate positive experiences which personally drive each of us. "We tend to emphasize our goals, dreams, and passions from our childhood to adult years, but as our seniors get older, they often stop participating in these activities which make them happy. This can be out of fear they can no longer participate, like they used to, or for other reasons, like mobility issues," said Ms. Dhaliwal.

What if you had to give up doing the things which made you happy – the things you love to do? This question is at the heart of Nurse Next Door's unique concept of Happier Aging. Many seniors have stopped pursuing their passions and dreams, which can lead to overall feelings of unhappiness and, eventually, depression.

Opportunities which bring happiness can be big or small. Going to a garden center to choose summer bulbs or playing a chess match at the park are some of the small things Nurse Next Door can do for clients, to keep them engaged in the things they are passionate about.

There have also been some big dreams fulfilled by Nurse Next Door. Robert, a World War II veteran, was able to take flight, after 63 years on a Harvard Aircraft, when his caregiver discovered his passion for flight. Miss Daisy, an 88-year-old client, who needs 24-hour nursing care, started a bucket list with her caregiver, which included starting her vegetable garden.

It's this passion which has differentiated Nurse Next Door from other healthcare providers. The organization offers fundamental healthcare needs, such as home nursing, personal care, and meal preparation, as well as customized care which focuses on what brings joy to their clients' everyday life.

"Happier Aging is about getting our seniors back to doing the things they love, we want our clients to live their best lives, without boundaries." Said Ms. Dhaliwal.
