NORTH DURHAM: On Tuesday, March 24th, the North Durham Chamber of Commerce gathered at Blackstock Recreation Complex for its Annual General Meeting, running from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sponsored by several organizations, including TD, Durham College, and Elevation Accounting. Lunch was served by Mary's Country Kitchen.
Following the welcome remarks from emcee Jonathan van Bilsen and Scugog Mayor Wilma Wotten, the meeting continued with an update from Misty Santos, Executive Director.
"In 2025, we held a record-breaking fundraiser, released our first business survival compilation, and are hosting one of our largest meetings today," Ms. Santos said.
Ms. Santos mentioned that this type of growth and stability occurs only with a united, forward-thinking board of directors. She added that community support can help the North Durham Chamber make sure businesses are protected. Working on transit solutions, collaborating in economic development projects, and working with colleges and universities will help build future leaders.
"Our commitment is to grow connections and advocacy, supporting businesses facing change and challenges," Ms. Santos said.
Ms. Santos thanked the community for its ongoing support of the Chamber's work. Following her remarks, Elevation Accounting presented financial updates, and Taylor Wood outlined TD's commitment to innovating banking through meaningful interactions and streamlined services, supporting local business success.
Shortly before lunch, keynote speaker Robin Young from Durham College introduced his address on kindness, emphasizing that this skill is often overlooked in business growth.
Mr. Young added that to grow a business and community, the focus should not be limited to transactions but expanded to relationships.
"Thriving comes from building trust, cultivating relationships, and treating people well," Mr. Young said.
Following lunch, Fernando Lamanna took the stage to share stories about Brock Township.
"Council has approved a multi-year visitor strategy with partners and local leaders," Mr. Lamanna said.
Mr. Lamanna explained how they were collaborating with the Brock Board of Trade over the course of the plan. Activities included supporting initiatives at the North Durham Historical Society.
Judy Risebrough stepped up to speak next about what is happening in Uxbridge Township. One major project she mentioned was the development of a new hospital in Uxbridge.
“They have already started doing some of the press work for it, and they moved the helipad from where it was up into our soccer fields, because it's going to be on the [rooftop] of a building in about five years.”
The hospital is being built as part of the Oak Valley Health redevelopment project. Construction began last spring, with completion slated for 2028. The hospital is expected to open for patients a year afterward.
Lori Bowers from the Township of Scugog shared current affairs in the Scugog area. She mentioned how Phase Two of the Port Perry Fairgrounds is starting this spring, with Council approving the continuation of a consultation process.
Next, Chief Kelly LaRocca shared information about the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
Before concluding, Jessica Rhynas from Invest Durham highlighted their efforts to strengthen Durham Region’s business environment, aligning with the meeting’s focus on regional growth and partnership.
The North Durham Chamber of Commerce concluded the Annual General Meeting at 1:30 p.m, with attendees leaving the conference hall shortly afterward.
