MoJacks wrangle Rebels, cage Bruins

SCUGOG: The Port Perry MoJacks have earned three straight victories. The MoJacks opened the past week’s action with a rare Wednesday home game, hosting the Campbellford Rebels at Scugog Arena on January 22nd. It didn’t take long for Port Perry to get on the board. Just 37 seconds into the first frame, Justin Jacobs’ shot hit the top left corner of the Rebel net, giving the MoJacks a 1 to 0 lead. Then, less than nine minutes in, Noah Bray extended the lead to 2 to 0 with a goal. Less than two minutes later, Carter Thornton added a goal, and Port Perry led 3 to 0 after the first 20 minutes of play.

In the second period The MoJacks were able to get a power play goal, extending the lead to 4 to 0, but the Rebels later struck twice, making it a 4 to 2 game heading into the second intermission. Over a minute into the third period, Nick Chokrev-Cerpnjak got the puck to cross the goal line, extending Port Perry’s lead to 5 to 2. With less than seven and a half minutes remaining on the clock, and the MoJacks shorthanded, Jacobs backhanded a shot past the Campbellford goalie for his second goal of the game, and Port Perry won 6 to 2.

The MoJacks outshot the Rebels 68 to 29 in the victory. Port Perry looked to continue their winning ways in the first half of a home-and-home series against the Uxbridge Bruins in Uxbridge on Friday, January 24th.

Less than eight minutes in, the Bruins got the first goal of the game. However, a minute and a half later, Noah Donaghy scored, tying the game 1 to 1.

The game remained that way until the second period. Less than four and a half minutes in, Thornton gave Port Perry their first lead of the game with a power play goal. A little over six minutes in, the MoJacks extended their lead to 3 to 1 with a goal from Chokrev-Cerpnjak. But three straight Bruin goals in one minute and 13 seconds put Port Perry behind 4 to 3. With about four minutes left in the period, Thornton scored his second goal of the contest, bringing the game back into a deadlock of 4 to 4.

Exactly two minutes into the third frame, Josh Lemmon put the puck in the Uxbridge net, and Port Perry regained their lead. About a minute and a half later Chokrev-Cerpnjak got his second goal of the game, making it a 6 to 4 game. Port Perry would add a goal from Jacobs and held on to best the Bruins 7 to 4.

The two teams met once again on Sunday, January 26th, this time at Scugog Arena. Over 10 minutes into the first period, Donaghy scored, and Port Perry led 1 to 0. But, the Bruins later tied the game with only 11 seconds left on the clock.

The game remained tied until the third period. About five and a half minutes in, the Bruins scored, breaking the deadlock 2 to 1. However, less than nine minutes in, Lemmon tied the game on the power play. With less than four minutes left in regulation time, MoJacks captain Spencer Robinson scored the eventual game winning goal, and the MoJacks grabbed their third straight win 3 to 2. Goalie Corey Kuypers stopped 48 of the 50 shots he faced to get the win.
