Join Scugog for the Sports Hall of Fame ceremony in April 2022

COURTNEY McCLURE, The Standard

SCUGOG: The Scugog Sports Hall of Fame is no longer taking nominations for this year’s Sports Hall of Fame ceremony. However, people are welcome to submit nominations, and the committee will consider them for next year.

There are three categories for inductees people can choose from when nominating someone.

The first category is the builder category.

This group includes ‘officials’ such as umpires and coaches for sports teams throughout Scugog.

For this category, the committee looks for someone who has contributed significant effort and dedication to their sport for many years. These people have, typically, had a significant contribution to a certain sport or organization. And they may have helped ‘build the foundations’ of the organization.

The second category includes individual athletes. Nominations for this category include athletes who have has a ‘high-level of success’ in their sport, explained Ms. Ashbridge. They may have also competed at provincial or international events for their respective sport.

The last category is the teams’ category.

This includes teams which have won at a provincial, national or international competition.

They also have the Youth Recognition Award. This award is for people under the age of 18.

According to Leanne Ashbridge, the Committee Chair, this award is given to kids who are successful in the sport they are involved in.

The ceremony will be held on April 21st, 2022, and will be hosted in-person at the Scugog Community Hall in Port Perry.

Doors open between 6 and 6:30 p.m., and the program will start at 7 p.m. COVID-19 guidelines currently stand; visitors will have to show proof of vaccination.

As far as solid COVID-19 protocols go for this event, Ms. Ashbridge said it would all depend on the provincial COVID-19 protocols during April. And it will depend on what the Township of Scugog decides as well, she added.

“It’s a kind of wait and see [situation] at this point,” she explained.

During the Sports Hall of Fame ceremony, an exhibit will feature memorabilia and “artifacts.” They will be available for viewing during the night of the ceremony.

“We have quite a large collection,” stated Ms. Ashbridge.

If you’re interested in nominating a person for next year, you can find the form online at Scugog.ca. You can also drop into the Township office and pick up a physical nomination form.
