We all face challenges of hardship, disappointments, and setbacks. My hubby calls this, "The corner of hardship and perseverance."
More seniors are experiencing some kind of profound and heartbreaking challenge, such as social isolation, physical limitations, financial barriers, mental health challenges, or addiction to name a few.
Most seniors have an increased risk of falls, unmanaged chronic conditions, depression, malnutrition from skipping meals, poor vision, and difficulties with medications. Many seniors lack family support, community support, and must make choices, choosing between food, rent, and medications. The lack of social interaction can speed up cognitive decline and can increase the risk of dementia. This often leads them to be vulnerable and unsure where to turn. Without an advocate, isolated seniors can fall victim to scams, struggle to manage household bills, daily chores around the home, and daily finances.
Many seniors in our region face hardships but still can access vital emergency housing, and/or financial and mental health support. Seniors can apply for rent (geared to income) and affordable housing, through social housing (DASH) portal. Seniors need housing which is affordable, safe, accessible, adaptable, and barrier-free.
Many can connect low-income seniors to immediate community supports and services. Service Canada Services can help navigate federal benefits like CPP and OAS. There are programs like Meals on Wheels, adult programs, and home respite care to help seniors remain independent. This is where hope resides, so seniors can age with dignity and joy.
In the New International Version, NIV, the Bible directs believers to "Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly." Leviticus 19:32a. Honouring the elderly shows itself in things like prioritizing their physical needs, their emotional needs, and learning from their lifelong wisdom. Take time for intentional conversations and simply listen to their stories. Praying with the elderly and spending time reading scripture together creates a sacred space which can provide emotional healing and a strong sense of God's presence. This all helps seniors understand, God still has a purpose for them, even in later years.
When snuggling with my Mother on the bed, we would share stories from the Bible and enjoyed reading scripture together. I am grateful to have these treasured memories.
