Durham Chamber Orchestra presents Timeless Classics

NORTH DURHAM: Why not spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon listening to a full orchestra concert performing beautiful music? The Durham Chamber Orchestra (DCO) is pleased to announce the program line up, for its upcoming concert “Timeless Classics,” being held at 2 p.m., at the Port Perry Town Hall, on Sunday, June 2nd.

Have you ever found yourself humming a tune from a catchy advertisement or found yourself getting lost in the soundtrack of your favourite movie or Netflix series? Chances are, you've unknowingly encountered snippets of classical music which has been seamlessly integrated into modern storytelling. We may not know or remember the titles, but we do remember these snippets we hear. They come through various modern mediums, such as: radio, movies, streaming services, commercials, podcasts, and social media on and have become very much part of our day-to-day life experiences.

This is why the DCO has chosen the theme of "Timeless Classics" for our DCO 2024 spring concert series. You can hear and enjoy this music, played by live musicians, and you can see the range of instruments required to make the type of sounds we hear in the music, associated with the media.

Remember the classic Looney Tunes “Rabbit of Seville,” with Buggs Bunny and Elmer Fudd engaged in their cometic antics? This iconic music is from Rossini’s “Overture to the Barber of Seville” which will be featured. Some of the other music you will enjoy includes the Mozart Symphony selections: from the movies 'Amadeus,' 'Trading places' and 'Serpico'. Another piece is, the famous, 'Barcarolle,' by Jacques Offenbach which was used in a romantic scene in the film 'Titanic' and other movies. The Brahms Hungarian Dance Number 5 was used in 'Schindler’s List' and other famous movies.

As a not-for-profit charity status community orchestra, the DCO is the only one of its kind in the Durham Region. Concerts are held for audiences in South and North Durham. Its musicians come from diverse backgrounds, including experienced musicians as well as promising young musical talent. They are all bound together by a shared passion for music, and their performances aim to open the door to a new musical experience for audiences young and old.

The goal of a DCO concert is to bring the experience of a real orchestra to the local areas within the Durham Region. For many, it is their first opportunity to experience the unique music, created by a range of musical instruments, such as violins, cellos, flute, trumpet, keyboard and percussion. The orchestra plays a large variety of music structured around a theme. The Music Director for the DCO is Felipe Luzuriaga, who has conducted numerous ensembles and orchestras, internationally, and has written and arranged music of different genres, for studio recordings, films, theatre, and dance. He brings his extensive experience and degrees, from the University of Toronto, Boston Conservatory, and University San Francisco de Quito to the DCO, where he is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree, in Orchestral Conducting, at the University of Toronto.

The DCO believes strongly in the importance of giving back to the community and being able to share the gift of music with audiences, musicians, and enthusiasts from all walks of life. So, mark your calendars for Sunday, June 4th, and don't miss this exciting concert which is sure to delight all movie music lovers!

Tickets are $25 and are available in advance at Port Perry Town Hall Theatre. We look forward to seeing you there!
