What a rather dreary month this has been! Either too cold or too damp to do the many things outside that need to be finished up. My “to do” list never gets any shorter, since anything I manage to scratch off immediately gets replaced by something else.

It’s been a slow week, socially speaking, compared to some. The main event was the full turkey lunch for Seniors on Tuesday. Kudos to Mary’s Country Kitchen and staff for a great meal! The guest speaker was Julia Nolis, Assistant Curator at the Uxbridge Scott Historical Society. One great piece of news came at lunch: a new sound system is being purchased and, hopefully soon will be in use soon. We can all shout “hurrah” for that bit of news!

Celebrations this week included Gail Shier Williamson. Gail lives in Port Perry with hubby Alex, a high school mate of mine, but was born and raised just down the 7th on the family farm with siblings Carol, Linda and Ron! Congrats also to Sheila Buffan, who owns The Flooring Barn but has lots of time for other things as well! Best of anniversary wishes to two great people, John and Nora Corrigan Cavers, on their 41st! You can find John anywhere there are photo possibilities. Nora, I knew since she was a very young teen! Congratulations to Laura Taylor for her excellent project of crocheting poppies of all sizes. She started this project several years ago, and the results are all the various displays you see around town during Remembrance time. She has managed to get others involved and come up with ideas, such as the poppy-on-a-stick this year. Recently, she presented the Poppy Committee of the Legion with $725! A great idea carried out!

For me, I could barely keep up with the flow of information, so you would really need to go to his site. The next, and last, meeting of the year will be on Thursday, December 11th (not 18), our Christmas party. There will be no Zoom. Bring goodies if desired, and anything from Christmas past, show to show! The meeting starts at 7 p.m., in the library downstairs.

The Uxbridge Horticultural Group will meet on Wednesday, December 10th, and this will be a potluck supper at 6 p.m. Bring a friend.

The Legion Pipes and Drums members have had a busy couple of weeks, playing at several Santa Parades and being involved in a movie shoot in Toronto. Aside from having to leave town at 4 a.m., it apparently was a very pleasant event to be part of and possibly more of the same to come, who knows?

The Sandford Community Association welcomes Santa on Saturday, November 29th, from 9 to 11 a.m. Admission is by donation. Vendors will also be present. Monday, December 1st, there will be a special gathering at Epsom church to honour the retirement of Henry Reinders as Regional Rep. for Canadian Food Grains. Members from Sandford were once involved in helping, and the church has supported the group many times. On December 6th and 7th, Tindalls Greenhouse will once more host a number of local vendors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At the Foster on Sunday, the “Ladies of the Foster” finally got to give their presentation of “A Christmas Carol”. This had been postponed from last Sunday. There was a small but appreciative audience. A short Carol singing followed, climaxed by a beautiful solo by Jane Loewen. When she hits those high notes, I expect the glass will shatter sometime!

On Sunday, the Sandford Zephyr United Church commemorated its first anniversary as an amalgamated congregation. Rev. Li conducted the service, and our very special music was provided by Ruth Baker, her daughter Donna and granddaughter Emma and grandson on violins, etc. It was great to hear them and what a musical family they are!

Following the service, our younger members served an overabundance of food, and a lovely special cake was enjoyed. Next Sunday, Carol O’Neil will be with us once more. It is always a treat to have her leading and to welcome her and her husband, Mark Clarke, to our congregation! Please join us at 10 am. This is the first Sunday of the Lenten season!
