Sunday, the last day of August! Well, it sure felt more like November these last couple of mornings when the temps were +6C and +7! It warmed up nicely during the day, and hopefully, all those folks attending the Port Perry Fair could leave their coats at home.
The Uxbridge Fair is this coming week, and I expect the most I will see of it this year is the inside of the Lions Food Booth. Stop by for some great snacks! Of course, the highlight will be Friday evening when the tractor pull takes place. This year, I will not be showing any flowers, but part of the experience was meeting people in the registration booth.
Earlier in the month, we learned of the death of Dale Feasby. He had been married to Elizabeth for 54 years, and they had three children, six grandchildren, two sisters, Elaine and Lorie, and several nieces and nephews. At the end of the 7th, there has been sadness this week, too, as we learned of the death of Debby Jennings (Miller) Wilson. Debby was the wife of Steve Wilson. Our deepest sympathies to Steve, sons Scott and Jeffrey, and stepchildren Brooke and Chris Wilson.
Best wishes to Lisha Van Nieuwenhove and husband Grant Evans, who have now been married for 9 years. They don’t seem to be doing stage acting lately, but Grant keeps busy with the cows, and Lisha is everywhere! Congratulations also, to probably old-time Sandford people will know. Elizabeth (Carruthers) and Ike Meyers will be celebrating their 65th anniversary with an open house on Sunday, September 4th.
Horseshoe pitching continues every Tuesday, but the time has changed, along with the sun, to 5 p.m. This week is the championship, tossing for the Kirvan Cup and/or the Ken and Irene Watts Trophy. All welcome! One game tryout $10 or $30 for membership, and you become a member of the Uxbridge Historical Society and can attend all the upcoming talks. On September 12th, the topic is “Taste of Heritage” with Chef Alex. Doors open (Schoolhouse) at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, September 10th, the Uxbridge Horticultural Group meets at 7 p.m., Seniors Centre. Special guest speaker is renowned Mark Cullen! His topic is “How the World is Changing Gardening and how Gardening is Changing the World!” Memberships are also due! The presenter at the Foster Friday night was 1st timer, Madison Holder, whose songs were from musical Theatre. Next week, a lady who has been several times, Laurel Augustine, with guitar and vocals. As I mentioned last week, the Friends of the Foster are under threat from the Region of losing our parking, both boulevard and street parking, the latter because of the bike lanes. The money raised by these concerts and other events at the Foster is what pays for the maintenance of the building. No parking, no concerts, weddings, funerals,or others, and, incidentally, this would also apply to the cemetery since there is no parking there except on the roadside. Letters to the editor of both papers, and/or to the Region, would be appreciated.
Church resumes for the Sandford Zephyr congregation next Sunday.
