A strawberry moon in the sky and strawberries in the field! This lowest moon will not be seen again until 2034, but hopefully, we will get our fill of sweet treats for several months ahead and every year til then. It’s been a very busy week with lots of birthdays. Diane Signal, one of my sorority sisters, had a birthday the day after the group got together for lunch. Ryan Tindall also celebrated, and with all those amazing cooks in the family, I am sure they had a fab birthday cake. Then, there was Rev. Rob Kennedy. Rob serves the congregation in Port Perry but has been called on a lot lately for other services as well! Happy birthday also to Heather (Bell, Ashton) Card. Heather keeps busy in the accounting field but enjoys playing her flute when asked! Birthday greetings also to our former minister, Rev. Eiko Hosaka, who now keeps busy preparing and selling special Japanese treats. Best wishes to Dan Cearns, reporter for this paper! A special greeting to a long-time friend, Marie Forsyth, who was 93! Back in the day when Uxbridge had many of our own agencies, Marie worked many years in the Public Health office!
Congratulations go out to several of our local young ladies. Morgan Findlay graduated from Paramedic School and now she and her friend are both certified in a career certainly needing their contributions. Emily Gibson graduated from Guelph U with a master of Science, Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics. Her sister Olivia also recently graduated. Another young lady, Grace Risebrough, graduated from U of Guelph with a Bachelor of Applied Science, Majoring in Child Studies ( with distinction)and will be going to McMaster for her Masters of Occupational Therapy. A BIG congratulations not only to these remarkable young ladies but to their parents as well!
Welcome home to Yvonne and Michell Harrison who have returned from another of their wonderful mother/daughter tours, this time to Croatia. The scenery and architecture was amazing! As I said, the Sorority ladies met on Tuesday for lunch. On Wednesday, the Uxbridge Community Care group met at Douglas Crossing. After a great lunch, we were entertained by a line-dancing group! On Wednesday night, the Horticultural group met at the Seniors Centre. Shaleagh Kirby gave a short talk on the local ecosystems and insects. The main speaker was Michael Head, a retired lawyer, who talked about how he got into beekeeping eight years ago and his progress. He now has eight hives and collects hundreds of pounds of honey. Next month the speaker is Craig Virgir, a certified arborist, who will enlighten us about pruning! On Thursday evening, at the Quaker Hill School House, Uxbridge Scott Museum, Allan McGillivray spoke to a full house. He recounted many episodes about the history of Uxbridge and its citizens. The man is a marvel! There will be another talk in July. Also, on July 1st, don’t forget the Old Fashioned picnic to be held on the grounds of the museum. Bring your own food and play old-style games. Help for the day is needed, and credits for school are available. Also, remember that every Tuesday evening at the museum, there are horseshoes being pitched, and all are invited to participate at 6 p.m.! North Durham Nature will meet this month at Uxbridge Seniors. The speaker is our own James Kamstra, talking about snakes! Like ‘em or hate ‘em! Leaskdale Loop Day was Saturday 14th. There are now 15 places with various exhibits in which to stop and enjoy the countryside. These will take place every second Tuesday of the month into October! This past Friday, Mark Thackway was the musician at the Foster on Friday night.
Due to the many events taking place in Uxbridge, there was a small but enthusiastic crowd. Next week, a new group will be highlighted, a choir titled the Jonathan Liebich Choir! I am looking forward to their presentation. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the concert at 7:30 p.m. Admission by donation at the door!Zephyr Scott Lions had to cancel their spaghetti dinner this month, but the next one is scheduled for July 11th. They are keeping busy as a barbecue is planned for June 21st, in front of the Zephyr Mini Mart, 8 a.m. -1 p.m. This is the same day the community yard/driveway sale will be taking place throughout the village! The other big event for that day is the Lucy Maud Society Gardens of Uxbridge Tour. Tickets are still available. This is a self-driving tour of eight different gardens in the area. You can do all or as many as you please! Their lunches with speakers will begin in July. The cost is $35 this year!
This morning, Adele Boy led church. She was back from her family visit to the Vancouver Island, Victoria area, where there was no smoke. Next week, I will lead a short service, and we will be delighted to have Nicky Stovitts and her guide dogs in training with us. All are welcome to join us. The following week, we will be celebrating 100 years of the birth of the United Church.
