NORTH DURHAM: According to a press release, sent out on September 6th, 2022, by the Region of Durham, the Region and municipalities are coming together this month for National Hunger Action Month.
“Here [in] Scugog, the campaign aligns with Hunger Action Month for September,” explained the director of community services for the Township of Scugog, Lori Bowers. “Mayor Drew has declared the month of September Hunger Action Month in the Township of Scugog.”
Feed the Need is a regional food bank located within Durham Region.
“Food security is a growing and real problem in our communities,” said the CAO of the Township of Uxbridge, Kristi Honey. “We are very appreciative of the assistance food banks provided following the tornado in May. Sadly, the list of residents our local foodbank supports is growing. I am encouraging our community, as well as our staff, to get involved this September to fill the shelves and take a bite out of hunger.”
Feed the Need actively supports Uxbridge residents, said Ms. Baskin. They were also involved in helping Uxbridge residents this past May, when a tornado struck the town as it swept across Durham Region.
Ms. Baskin explained, through Durham Social Services, Feed the Need provided food for displaced and otherwise affected residents immediately after the storm.

Scugog and Uxbridge townships are asking residents to donate non-perishable food items to this cause. Examples include (unopened) packaged school snacks, canned or jarred goods and packaged dry goods.
They will also be happy to accept other daily necessities, like diapers and feminine hygiene products.
According to Ms. Bowers, the food drive initiative will directly support Operation Scugog.
Donations can be dropped off at multiple locations throughout Scugog Township. The first location is the Township of Scugog municipal office, located at 181 Perry Street in Port Perry. The second is the Scugog Community Recreation Centre, at 1655 Reach Street and the third is at the Port Perry Fire Station, located at 30 Crandell Street. Both the rec centre and fire station are located in Port Perry.

“Here at home, the Loaves and Fishes food bank, in Uxbridge, has also been very busy supporting a growing list of local residents. Residents who are able [to] take action against hunger, by supporting either the Feed the Need initiative or the Loaves and Fishes food bank, in order to make sure our residents in need do not go without.” explained Ms. Baskin.
Uxbridge residents can support National Hunger Month by dropping off donations, at the Uxbridge Public Library or Town Hall. There are also food bank collection sites, located at Zehrs, Pharmasave and Trail Capital IDA.
