The Port Perry Lumberjacks toppled the Little Britain Merchants with a lopsided score on Sunday, January 26th, at Scugog Arena.
The Lumberjacks were looking to find their winning ways again after a 7-2 loss to the Clarington Eagles on Thursday, January 23rd.
Less than a minute and a half into the first period, Parker Lemay scored on just the Lumberjack’s third shot of the game. Then, about four minutes later, Kyle Bailey knocked the puck into the open left side of the Merchants’ net for a power-play goal, extending the lead to 2-0. The Lumberjacks continued to dominate the first period, with shots being 13 to 4 in their favour by the halfway mark. Over 12 minutes into the period, on a Lumberjacks power play, Cameron Marshall tipped the puck past the Merchants’ goaltender to make it 3-0. Forty-three seconds later, a Jacob Sharpe shot rippled twine to extend the lead to 4-0.
The game would remain that score until just before the nine-minute mark of the second period when the Merchants struck to make it 4-1. But, just 38 seconds later, Marshall scored his second goal of the game to restore the four-goal lead. Then, nearly 11 minutes into the period, Charlie Paton slapped the puck into the net, making it 6-1. 14 seconds after that goal, Nate Stapleton scored his first goal of the season, and it was a 7-1 score. With less than six minutes remaining on the clock, Zach Caron scored, giving the Lumberjacks an 8-1 lead. Thirty-four seconds later, the Merchants put the puck in the net again, cutting the lead to 8-2. But, with just 38 seconds left, Jacob Sharpe rung a shot off the post, into the net and then off of the other post for his second goal of the game. The Lumberjacks took a 9-2 lead into the intermission.
The Lumberjacks would get the only goals of the third period, with Nate Stapleton, Johannes Kalm and Aaron Dawson scoring for the team. The Lumberjacks finished the game with a 12-2 victory over the Merchants.
