Special to The Standard
SCUGOG: Port Perry Angels u15 – Team Azzolin advanced to the gold medal game, aided by strong pitching by Kaley Doerfler and Kaitlyn Hancock throughout the tournament.
Kaley pitched seven strong innings to defeat a stubborn Cobourg team 9-6. Offensive stars of the game, as in previous games this weekend, went to Ava Marshall, who, for the second time in the tournament, went three for four, just missing out on hitting for the cycle with a home run, triple and double. This was followed closely by Jordynne McClurg, who hit four home runs throughout the tournament.
Prior to advancing to the finals with four straight wins, Port Perry plucked off the biggest upset of the entire season as they handed Oshawa Lady B’s their first loss. They defeated them 6-3, stopping them from having an undefeated season in league play. Kaitlyn Hancock pitched a masterful game. Striking out 13 batters and allowing only three hits. By virtue of the win, it relegated Oshawa to a third-place finish.
Playing for the gold, with identical 4 wins 0 loses records, were Whitby – Harness and Port Perry Angels – Azzolin. As, began the norm with Whitby, both teams throughout the season usually have to decide the winner in the later part of the game. This proved to be the case again, as Whitby held on to a 4-3 win in the seventh inning, winning the gold.
Unfortunately, what proved to be a motivational rallying point for Port Perry, to win a silver medal, was the team losing a key player, Erin Correa, to a series of facial injuries while warming up for the Oshawa game.
In closing, it has been a very successful season overall, as Port has accumulated three tournament golds and two silvers, and qualified for the Provincial A Grand Championships. Port Perry ended up with 35 wins, 11 losses while scoring 404 runs, giving up 246 runs against.
The coaching staff would like to thank all the parents for their support throughout the season.
