LORILEE YVETTE,

Special to The Standard

SCUGOG: June 3rd-5th marked the annual Paul Currelly Tournament, hosted by the Cobourg Angels Association.

The Port Perry Angels U13 RED team took to the field Saturday for round-robin play taking on the Mississauga North Tigers, the Whitby Eagles, and the Montreal South Shore Stars. The PPA RED team came out strong, winning their first game against the Tigers, 14-4. They battled hard to come back and defeat the Eagles in the last inning, winning 3-2. The third game of the day against the Stars was a nail-bitter, going three innings with no score! The Angels came up short, losing 2-1.

With a 2-1 record on the day, the U13 RED team advanced to the semi-finals, to take on the 3-0 Brampton Blazers. On Sunday, the Angels came to play; they owned the diamond. They took an early lead with a couple of runs, and with some strong, smart defence, they left Brampton scoreless through three innings. The Blazers fought back to take the lead, 5-4 in the fourth inning. The Angels tied it up in the fifth inning, only for Brampton to squeeze out one run to take back the lead. In the sixth inning, the Angels drove in three more runs to take a two-run lead, and in their last at-bat, Brampton swung hard, earning one run, but the U13 RED team played some tight defence, shutting them down to win 8-7.

On the other side of the park, the South Shore Stars were defeated by the Barrie Storm in extra innings, playing international tie-breaker rules to advance to the finals.

Battling it out for the gold, the Port Perry Angels took on the Barrie Storm, in the championship game. Barrie took an early lead; up seven runs through four innings. The Angels’ bats came alive in the fifth inning, scoring five runs! Giving it their all, the Angels scored one more run in the sixth and seventh innings, but fell short three runs in the end, losing 10-7 to take home the silver.

Congratulations to the PPA RED team. Well played and well deserved, a valiant team effort. Thanks to coaches Wendy, Pippa, Josh, and Alyssa for all your time and hard work spent teaching these Angels to never give up, play hard, and have great sportsmanship!

The U13 RED team is back in action, June 10th to 12th, for the Barrie Bash! Go Angels!
