SCUGOG: Surprisingly, the maple trees did not disappoint, as the leaves gave a striking show of fiery reds, oranges and yellows. Breathing in the cool scents of fallen leaves, at this lovely time of year, provides a sense of quieter days ahead, bringing another gardening season to an end.

Mild temperatures still allow for last minute planting of spring blooming bulbs, and if you want to save summer bulbs, then once a hard frost damages the stems, dig up summer bulbs, like dahlias and cannas. Please think to leave fallen leaves and stems as places for beneficial critters and toads to spend their winter months, as safe places, during hibernation.

On Tuesday, October 7th, speaker Mary-Jane Pilgrim, from the Peterborough Master Gardeners, brought an evening of entertainment with her all-new "Garden Trivia Two.” There were lots of laughs, as members became very competitive while the groups secretly discussed answers to some interesting garden facts. I now know, ladybugs under stress release toxic yellow fluid from “their joints,” as a warning to predators. Thank-you M-J for a fun night.

On Tuesday, November 4th, the Nestleton Hall air will be filled with the scents of fresh evergreens, set-up for the Holiday Planter Workshop. Registered members, please remember to bring your secateurs, gloves, and a hobby apron/work shirt, to protect your hands and clothing from sticky pine resin. You may bring in ribbon and additional accessories, to personalize your planter. Members, who are not registered, may still attend and observe the process of assembling the project. It will be a relaxing evening for socializing and creativity. Thank-you to everyone who assisted in organizing the workshop.

See Kim, as membership is due in November, for the 2026 Garden Season. There will be sweets and refreshments available at the workshop on this evening, as well.
