SCUGOG: One of the township’s longest-running traditions is returning to the water next month as the 55th annual Canoe the Nonquon race sets off on Saturday, June 7. The beloved race, organized by the Lake Scugog Historical Society and sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe and Kayak Racing Association (OMCKRA), brings together paddlers of all ages and skill levels for a scenic and challenging journey through the heart of North Durham.
The race begins on the winding Nonquon River just north of Seagrave, offering 12 kilometres of twists, turns, and narrow channels before a final 8-kilometre push along the open waters of Lake Scugog to the finish line in Port Perry. Participants can choose to complete only the river portion, finishing at Robinglade Park, or continue on to the full course finish at the public pier in front of the Latcham Centre.
“This event is really about celebrating our community’s history, natural beauty, and spirit,” said Amanda Gallagher, Curator at the Scugog Shores Museum Village. “It’s amazing to see families, friends, and even seasoned athletes come together to take part in a race that has become a rite of passage in Scugog.”
Originally launched as a fundraiser for the Museum Village, Canoe the Nonquon continues to support the Scugog Shores Museum and Archives, with all proceeds going toward preservation and educational programming.
“It’s a fantastic way to raise money for a cause that helps us keep our local stories alive,” said longtime volunteer and paddler Jim McArthur. “You don’t have to be an expert. If you’ve got a canoe or kayak and a good sense of direction, or at least know to keep right on the river, you’re good to go.”
Paddlers race the clock and may launch any time between 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on race day. Registration is $65 per vessel, and participants are strongly encouraged to raise additional funds through pledges. Registration will be open at the Latcham Centre, located at 121 Queen St., on Friday, June 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. All racers must check in at the Latcham Centre to receive their race number before heading to the start line on Scugog Line 12.
The race features multiple categories for both competitive and recreational paddlers using canoes, kayaks, or stand-up paddle boards. Shuttle vans will be available to return participants from the finish points to their vehicles.
With more than five decades of history behind it, Canoe the Nonquon remains the largest fundraiser of the year for the Museum, and a cherished tradition for the community.
“Fifty-five years is something to be proud of,” added Ms. Gallagher “It’s more than a race — it’s a celebration of who we are.”
