Old but new

The Caped Cearnsader

I’m back to work here at The Standard now after spending a nice couple week vacation. What this year’s vacation taught me is though you may go to the same place or do the same thing you’ve done in the past on your vacation, it doesn’t mean it can’t be a new, memorable, unique or different experience.

To explain, let me go through my most recent vacation chronologically. For starters, for a second straight year, my mother, my sister and I visited the town of Midland. Though we did trek through Wye Marsh again, and checked out the artistic murals in the downtown area again, there were some different things about this year’s trip. For one thing, to switch things up we stayed in a different hotel this time around. As well, on the adventurous side, we decided to take part in a Miss Midland Boat Cruise tour. The cruise was about two and a half hours, and it was fascinating to learn some of the history and stories about the nearby islands and the town of Midland. Though it was a warm day, we decided to sit on the top deck of the boat. Luckily, the breeze on the water kept us cool for the most part, and I had on enough sunscreen to avoid ending up being sunburnt.

Next, we decided to take in a Toronto Blue Jays game in Toronto at the Rogers Centre. Though it was the third time in my life seeing the Jays play live, and the Jays ended up blowing a couple large leads en route to losing to the Tampa Bay Rays 10-9, the experience was still special. That game was the last time pitcher Aaron Sanchez played for the Jays before being traded to the Houston Astros. Also, it was my first time seeing most of the current Jays roster at a live game. To put this in perspective, the last time I had been to a Jays game at the Rogers Centre before this year, Adam Lind was still a member of the team.

As one last attraction on my vacation, we decided to visit the Lynde Shores Conservation Area in Whitby. Over the years, this site has been a favourite of my family and I to feed the birds and take a serene stroll through nature. In the past, we’ve been able to have chickadees land on our hands to get some seeds. That didn’t happen for me this time around, but at one point we were mobbed by geese and ducks looking for some food, and had some interest from some chipmunks.

As I look back, I know this vacation has left me with some great memories I can look back at fondly in the future.
