DAN CEARNS The Standard SCUGOG: The Port Perry Lumberjacks came up with a dominant win over the North Kawartha Knights in their only game this past week.
The game was held on Friday, November 24th, at Scugog Arena. The Lumberjacks came into the game on a two-game winning streak.
Eight minutes into the first period, Lumberjacks captain Nolan Goddard stole the puck from a Knights defender while the Lumberjacks were on a penalty kill and scored a shorthanded goal. This goal sent bags of warm clothing careening onto the ice for the Lumberjacks’ Wooly Toss, a clothing donation event in support of Operation Scugog. Before the period ended, Parker Lemay snapped a puck past the Knights goaltender to extend the lead to 2-0 for Port Perry.
The Lumberjacks continued to add to the lead in the second period. Over 13 minutes in, Andrew Naccarato-Soule put a puck past the outstretched glove of the Knights goaltender, making it a 3-0 game. Just 34 seconds later, Johannes Kalm scored to extend the lead to 4-0. Kyle Robillard added a power-play goal late in the period, and the Lumberjacks had a commanding 5-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Tensions spilled over a bit in the third period as Mateo Guerrieri of the Lumberjacks got into a tussle with Ben Powles of the Knights seven minutes into the frame. With less than two and a half minutes remaining on the clock, Kalm would backhand a puck through the legs of the Knights goaltender, giving Port Perry a 6-0 advantage. The Lumberjacks held on to that lead to defeat the Knights 6-0. Lumberjacks goaltender Gavin Bradt made 24 saves to earn the shutout.
