Local firefighters getting out into community for Fire Prevention Week

DAN CEARNS, The Standard

UXBRIDGE/SCUGOG: Local fire prevention officials will be out in the community this week, to educate the public for the annual Fire Prevention Week. Uxbridge firefighters will be at Zehrs, on Thursday, October 8th, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., and at Vince’s Market, on Friday October 9th, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., giving away grocery bags for fire prevention week. They will also be at the Uxbridge Canadian Tire and Rona stores, on Saturday, October 24th. The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is ‘Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!’ “We absolutely do respond to [kitchen fire calls] frequently, and so it’s an important initiative to always talk about [kitchen safety], not just one week in the year, but all the time,” Uxbridge fire prevention officer Colin Clark told The Standard. Meanwhile, Scugog Township is set to announce the winner of their Junior Fire Chief for a Day contest, this week. Scugog Firefighters will have outdoor display tables at Foodland and Wal-Mart, in Port Perry, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., on Wednesday, October 7th and Thursday, October 8th and will also be doing pizza delivery with Domino’s Pizza on those evenings. “If your pizza is delivered by a firefighter and your smoke and CO alarms are working, your order is free,” explained a Scugog press release.
