SCUGOG: Do you have leftover Candy? Would you like to put it to good use while keeping it away from your waistline? We have a family-friendly solution for you! How about making a Gingerbread House and bringing it to the Scugog Memorial Public Library for the annual village?
This year marks the 30th Anniversary of this very popular holiday event, and the best part is that it is FREE to enter and FREE to visit! Here are the guidelines: It is a non-judged event with no theme. However, by celebrating 30 years, be as creative as you wish. We ask that all entries be made of gingerbread. Kits are ok, but original designs are what make the village so special. Battery accessories, such as lights, are discouraged because they are hard to maintain throughout the village. Please try to keep the base sizes relative to the size of the creation. We know that people like to make “Christmas scenes”; however, every year we are challenged by space limitations, so please keep that in mind.
We can add lots of electrical lights to your creation if you leave a hole underneath or at the back, and we can decorate the entire village with miniature figurines, greenery, and trees, as well as artificial snow. It is helpful if the base is white, as it blends in nicely.
If you need a good gingerbread recipe, there are copies at the library and on our Facebook site: Bakersville: The Animated Gingerbread Village.
Bring your entry to the library Monday, December 1st to Thursday, December 4th, inclusive, during operating hours. Then, make sure to come to the library during the holiday season, starting Saturday, December 6th, to see the spectacular animated display! There is no admission fee. The Bakersville Animated Gingerbread Village runs until Sunday, January 4th.
Scugog Memorial Public Library hours are: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Thank you to MSIFN Maada’ookii and the Township of Scugog Grant Committee for financial support with this community project, as well as our local print media for “spreading the word”.
