NORTH DURHAM: Families looking for an affordable way to enjoy the outdoors this summer will have two opportunities to cast a line in the waters without purchasing a fishing licence, as Ontario’s annual Free Fishing Weekends return, later this month.
Anglers of all ages can fish for free, during Father’s Day Weekend, on June 20th and 21st, followed by Family Fishing Week, from June 27th to July 5th. The initiative encourages people of all ages to experience Ontario’s lakes, rivers and waterways, while learning more about fishing and conservation.
The timing also coincides with the opening of bass fishing season, on June 27th, creating an exciting opportunity for anglers eager to target one of the region’s most popular sport fish.
In Brock Township, officials are encouraging visitors to take advantage of the renowned fishing opportunities available on Lake Simcoe.
“Brock is proud to be known as the Smallmouth Bass Capital of Canada,” said, Brock Township Mayor, Mike Jubb. “With bass season opening, on June 27th, there’s no better time to visit the Beaverton Harbour, enjoy the beauty of Lake Simcoe and experience some of the finest bass fishing anywhere in the province. Whether you’re a lifelong angler or trying fishing for the first time, we welcome everyone to discover what makes our waterfront community so special.”
Scugog Township Mayor, Wilma Wotten said, Lake Scugog offers an equally memorable experience for families and anglers.
“Lake Scugog is one of our community’s greatest natural assets and a wonderful place for residents and visitors to spend time together, outdoors,” said Mayor Wotten. “These free fishing opportunities make it easy for families to connect with nature, create lasting memories, and enjoy the excellent fishing opportunities our lake has to offer.”
While fishing licences are not required, during the designated free fishing periods, participants must still follow Ontario fishing regulations, including conservation catch limits, size restrictions, and sanctuary rules. Anglers are also required to carry government-issued identification while fishing.
