DURHAM: On Saturday, June 14th, Durham Region is doing a Curbside Giveaway Day. The idea is for residents to put belongings they do not want anymore on their curb in usable condition.
Anyone passing by would pick it up for free between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Items not acquired should be returned to the resident's home.
Participation is straightforward. Residents should refer to a list of what items will or will not be accepted. Any items intended to be given away must be labelled as Free and placed at the curb on Curbside Giveaway Day. Items must be returned to the resident's home by 7 p.m., but alternative options are available.
Unwanted items can be donated to a charity organization or given to a local thrift store. Residents can also post them on free classifieds websites like Kijiji, Varage, or Facebook Marketplace.
Residents who leave their unwanted items on the curb after Curbside Giveaway Day will be subject to by-law enforcement.
Additional reminders concerning the activity are as follows. Baby items like car seats and cribs should not be placed on the curb for safety reasons. Abide by all traffic laws, watch for children, and clean and disinfect items before the giveaway. Do not block traffic or sidewalks or place items on the road. Trespassing, blocking driveways, and illegal parking are not acceptable. Donated fabric items are to be put through the laundry before the giveaway.
This is an opportunity to minimize the amount of garbage disposal by donating unwanted items and interacting with the community.
