BROCK: Work is underway on the creation of a new school, to consolidate Beaverton Public School (PS) and Thorah Central Public School (PS).
At a meeting, on Monday, June 5th, Durham District School Board (DDSB) trustees received a quarterly construction and major projects update.
Lisa Bianca, the board's Head of Facilities Services, explained, the school board is making "good progress with a number of long-awaited capital priorities."
Speaking specifically to the Beaverton, Thorah school project, Ms. Bianca said, "Construction is progressing well, as we enter the prime building season."
"We're looking forward to some good progress over the next few months," she added.
The DDSB received approval, from the Ministry of Education in February 2018, to build this new school.
"The new school will replace and consolidate Beaverton PS and Thorah Central PS on the Beaverton PS site, in Beaverton," a staff report explained.
The report also provided a detailed update on the construction work on this project. "Project construction recommenced mid-March on the new facility. Site fill and compaction work is complete, with footings and foundations well underway. Project completion is currently scheduled for September 2024."
The new school is expected to include 418 student spaces, 49 child care spaces, three child care rooms and one room for the EarlyON child and family centre.
