BROCK: Sunshine, syrup, and strong community spirit defined a successful weekend at the 29th annual Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival, as thousands of visitors filled the downtown core, to celebrate one of Brock Township’s most cherished traditions.
Saturday’s picture-perfect weather set the tone, with blue skies and warm spring sunshine drawing large crowds early in the day. Streets quickly filled with festival-goers browsing vendor stalls, enjoying live entertainment, and lining up for classic maple treats.
Sunday began under cloudy skies, before afternoon rain rolled in, but it did little to dampen enthusiasm, as visitors continued to explore the festival and take in the many activities offered across the community.
“This festival is something people look forward to every year, and it’s easy to see why,” said Mike Jubb. “Even with a bit of rain on Sunday, the turnout was fantastic. It really speaks to the strength of this community and the pride people have in this event.”
The annual festival which typically attracts more than 10,000 visitors, once again, delivered a full slate of attractions, including: a bustling vendor market, live music, family-friendly entertainment, and interactive demonstrations.
A steady stream of visitors made their way through the Royal Canadian Legion, for the ever-popular pancake breakfast, while others explored the many displays and activities hosted at Sunderland Public School and the local arena.
Festival secretary, Ryan Williams said, the weekend was a strong success, from an organizers’ perspective.
“You always hope for good weather, and Saturday certainly delivered,” he said. “Sunday brought a bit of everything, but overall, we couldn’t be happier. The crowds were steady, the energy was great, and people really seemed to enjoy everything the festival had to offer.”
Out-of-town visitors were once again a major part of the festival’s draw.
“We come every year from Oshawa, and it never disappoints,” said visitor Sarah Ritchie. “The atmosphere is amazing, and the kids love the animals and activities. Even the rain didn’t slow us down.”
Another group, visiting from Pickering, echoed that sentiment.
“It’s such a great family event,” said Mark and Lisa Marzano. “There’s so much to see and do, and you can tell how much work the community puts into it. We’ll definitely be back.”
Throughout the weekend, live entertainment kept crowds engaged, while demonstrations, including: blacksmithing, wildlife presentations, and maple syrup production tours, highlighted the region’s agricultural roots and craftsmanship.
Signature events, like the bathtub races on Saturday and Sunday’s lawn tractor pull demonstration, added to the festival’s charm, while local organizations kept visitors well-fed with a wide range of food options.
Despite Sunday’s rain, organizers and attendees alike agreed the festival, once again, delivered on its reputation as a must-visit spring event.
“The Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival continues to grow, but it still feels like home,” said Mr. Williams. “That’s what makes it special, it’s not just about the syrup, it’s about community.”
As another successful year wraps up, organizers are already looking ahead to next year’s 30th anniversary edition, confident the sweet tradition will continue to bring visitors back to Sunderland for years to come .
