BROCK: Anglers from across Ontario descended on Lake Simcoe this past weekend, for the 2025 edition of the Competitive Sport Fishing League’s Bronzeback Cup, held on July 19th and 20th, out of Beaverton.
The tournament marked the official start of the Major League Fishing (MLF) Canada season and served as the first opportunity for teams to qualify for the prestigious MLF Toyota Series Championship, where Team Canada will face off against elite anglers from around the world, in the International Division.
After two days of tight competition, on one of Canada’s premier small mouth bass fisheries, it was the team of Derek Meloche and Rob Gray who emerged victorious, narrowly edging out brothers Cory and Lynn Johnston, who are themselves no strangers to the professional angling circuit.
“Lake Simcoe was on fire this weekend, and we had to be at our absolute best,” said Mr. Meloche, following Sunday’s weigh-in. “To come out on top against a field this strong, including the Johnstons, is an incredible feeling. We’re proud to represent Team Canada and can’t wait for the championship.”
Known as the Smallmouth Bass Capital of Canada, Brock Township has become a regular stop for top-tier competitive fishing events. The Bronzeback Cup is held annually in Beaverton and continues to grow in reputation, drawing attention from both anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.
“This event is a great showcase of what makes Brock Township special,” said Regional Councillor Mike Jubb. “We’re incredibly proud to host the Bronzeback Cup on Lake Simcoe, each year. It not only highlights our world-class fishery but also brings a huge boost to our local economy.”
Councillor Jubb noted the growing significance of sport fishing in regional tourism and emphasized the township’s support for continued partnerships with MLF Canada.
“This tournament puts Beaverton and Brock Township on the map, for anglers across the country and beyond,” he added. “It’s a win for our community, in every sense.”
With their win, Mr. Meloche and Mr. Gray have secured their spot at the MLF Toyota Series Championship. The rest of the Canadian field will be battling throughout the season for a chance to join them on the international stage.
Organizers expect next year’s Bronzeback Cup to attract even more participants and spectators, continuing Beaverton’s rise as a must-visit destination for fishing fans.
