BRANDON CLARK The Standard Intern
My name is Brandon Clark, and I am a resident of Whitby, Ontario. I have enjoyed writing since I was eight years old. When I think of the word 'Journalism,' the first image that comes to mind is journaling. At the time, I thought journalists only wrote stories, and I was partially right. I initially thought reporters handled all of the interviews and newspapers. The Journalism program at Durham College showed me the various fields explored. I was surprised that photography was included, seeing as other programs featured camera work. In retrospect, it makes sense that journalists use cameras, as there is a visual component to storytelling.
One of the courses in the Journalism program is called "Feature Writing and Publishing", which has students write features, editorials, and opinion pieces. To my surprise, it was a challenging semester, however I learned valuable information which could be applied to my field placement internship.
What sparked my interest in The Standard Newspaper the most was its close proximity to Oshawa, and the personal connection I have with Port Perry. I look forward to writing articles for the Port Perry and North Durham community.
