A Golden Weekend For The Port Perry Angels

LORILEE McKELVIE,

Special to The Standard

SCUGOG: The long weekend in May is always the Spring Classic opening tournament for the Port Perry Angels Softball Association. Despite the weather forecast, all teams arrived and were ready and excited to take the field.

The U13 division kicked off the tournament on Friday evening, hosting 10 teams from within Ontario and Quebec!

Our PPA U13 (BLACK) team went 0-4 in round robin play, battling hard against the Oshawa Lady B’s, the Mississauga Lady Jays, the Halton Hawks, and the London Lightning.

Our PPA U13 (RED) team went 2-2 in round robin play, defeating the Windsor Wildcats and the Kitchener Klassics but falling short to the Quebec Amazones and the Barrie Storm. In the U13 finalist game, the Windsor Wildcats defeated the Barrie Storm to take home the gold medal.

“Player of the game” medals were given out at each round robin game. Recipients for PPA RED were: Natasha, Addison, Dakota, and Jada! Recipients for PPA BLACK were: Jadyn, Ava, Sophie, and Kelly!

The U15 division kicked off their tournament on Saturday. Hosting three Port Perry teams, the Cobourg Angels, the Barrie Storm, the Kingston Jr. Gaels, and also the Whitby Eagles. The Port Perry Amaro team played hard but went 0-4 in round robin play. Congratulations to “Players of the game”: Chloe, Keeley, Katharine, and Emily!

The Port Perry Wilcox team came out strong, going 4-0 in round robin play. Congratulations to Madison (2), Isabelle, and Mali for receiving “Player of the game” medals!

The Port Perry Azzolin team crushed the round robin play, also going 4-0! Congratulations to “Players of the game”: Kaitlyn, Lexie, Kaley, and Jordynne!

The U15 Championship game came down to Port vs. Port (Wilcox vs. Azzolin)! Both teams came out with great pitching, awesome defense, and amazing offence. Highlights of the game include home runs from both teams: Nyla (PPA Wilcox) and Jordynne (PPA Azzolin). In the end, it was PPA Azzolin taking the gold and PPA Wilcox with silver medals on the weekend. Congratulations to ALL teams for a great weekend.

Thank-you to all of our volunteers, for helping run the tournament, especially with the heavy rain and strong winds causing flipped port-a-potties, endless damage to the surrounding Scugog area, and no power! A special mention to Rick Finlay, Jade Coutoulakis, Melissa Threapleton, Jennifer Hancock, Carolyn Harper, and our team of umpires, for all your work organizing and rescheduling games so the girls could play!

Come watch our U19 and Intermediate teams next weekend, at Carolyn Best and Joe Fowler Diamonds, for some more great action! All the best Port Perry Angels!
