KAWARTHA LAKES: The Kawartha Art Gallery is set to shine a spotlight on the next generation of local talent, with its upcoming Young Musicians Showcase, bringing together students from across the community, for an evening of music and inspiration.

The concert, part of the Gallery’s 2025/26 Music Series, will take place on Wednesday, April 15th, at 7 p.m., at Celebrations, in Lindsay, located at 35 Lindsay Street North. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $10 each, available in advance, online, or at the door.

The showcase will feature performances from student musicians, representing Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Mariposa Elementary School, Rolling Hills Public School, and the newly formed Kawartha Lakes Youth Concert Band.

Proceeds from the event will support youth music programming in the City of Kawartha Lakes, as well as ongoing initiatives at the Kawartha Art Gallery.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the talent and dedication of our local young musicians,” Susan Taylor, Executive Director of the Kawartha Art Gallery explained. “The Young Musicians Showcase is more than a concert, it’s an opportunity to highlight the vital role of music programs in our schools, foster community pride, and inspire the next generation of artists.”

For educators, the performance opportunity represents something even more meaningful. Beth Wilson, music teacher at Mariposa Elementary School, emphasized the lasting impact these experiences can have on young students.

“Giving elementary school students an opportunity to perform is essential because it gives a chance for the music they have become invested in to come alive,” she said. “It builds confidence, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility, while allowing students to see their hard work matters outside of the classroom. When young musicians step on stage, they aren’t just playing notes but are showing courage, using communication, as well as supporting one another. These experiences shape how they see themselves for years to come.”

The concert also continues the Gallery’s efforts to raise awareness about the importance of school-based music programs, particularly at a time when arts education often faces funding challenges.

Support for the Music Series has been bolstered through funding from Canadian Heritage, via the Canada Arts Presentation Fund. The initiative has allowed the Gallery to expand its programming, following a successful December concert, featuring brass and clarinet performers from the Kawartha Lakes Concert Band.

With a mix of youthful energy and community spirit, the April 15th showcase promises an engaging evening for audiences, while reinforcing the value of arts education across Kawartha Lakes.
