June is the midpoint of the year, and nature is in full bloom bringing with it the joy of summer! June typically offers warm and sunny weather and is an ideal backdrop for outdoor gatherings, and family fun. The summer break allows students, parents, and seniors a variety of activities and an opportunity for rest, recreation, to be with family or travel.
Engaging in summer activities, for seniors, can enhance their physical, mental, and social well-being. Spending time outside offers numerous health benefits but planning ahead is key to ensure comfort and safety.
Individuals who are 65 and older are at greater risk for experiencing serious health complications and should make informed decisions about where they travel and the recreation they choose. I enjoy spending time outdoors, as socialization is the key to happiness and well-being. There are several events which provide unique opportunities to build relationships, helping us to continue to grow, despite our age!
Choosing a fun, non-strenuous activity is beneficial for our physical and mental health. Seniors stuck inside, are often alone and this can contribute to ailing health and depression. When my Mother lived-in-Long-Term Care, she absolutely loved the music nights, as she hummed to familiar tunes while we twirled her around in her wheelchair. Museums and libraries are perfect places to visit, and they offer air-conditioned spaces and interesting events which can spark your loved one's curiosity.
Walking can be a simple and effective way to stay active, while maintaining strength and flexibility, even if you must push your loved one in their wheelchair! Taking a walk around the air-conditioned mall and window shopping can be enjoyable, with little or no expense. For those interested in spending time outdoors, grab a water bottle, some sunscreen, your hat and ask a friend or family member to check out the local trails, or the garden centre. Take your tackle box to the pier, during the spring and summer months, it's a great opportunity to enjoy some fellowship, surrounded by the creation God provided for us all. I love when my Church (Port Perry Baptist Church) has outdoor services. The view is always breath taking and very inspirational.
Take your family member to a senior's outdoor fitness class or to water aerobics. The buoyancy of water helps reduce stress on joints, so it is easier to move and stretch making it an excellent option for those with mobility challenges, plus it's a fantastic low-impact activity.
Familiar places and events can invoke memories and can be a wonderful way to help an older person reconnect with their life. Things like bird watching is fun, even in your own back yard, and can be a rewarding way to connect with nature. A visit to the zoo or an outdoor music event are marvellous healthy experiences. My favourite is a picnic in the park. Port Perry has a beautiful waterfront, where you can bring cushions for the park bench or comfortable chairs to relax in. Picnics are a wonderful way to enjoy the sunshine and spend quality time together embracing the outdoors. There, you can take a few photos together and capture the beauty of nature while creating precious memories.
There are plenty of recreational activities to try, start researching your options today! That way you can continue to enjoy God's blessings in life.
