Western Hoedown brings cowboy spirit to 96th Lake Scugog Regatta

SCUGOG: The spirit of the Old West rode into Port Perry and the surrounding Lake Scugog community over the weekend, as the 96th annual Lake Scugog Regatta celebrated its Western Hoedown theme from July 31st to August 2nd.

The long-running summer tradition brought together residents and visitors for a weekend of family entertainment, community events, and plenty of Western-themed fun. The mechanical bull proved to be one of the highlights of the festivities.

The weekend got off to a colourful start, with the Western Hoedown Parade, on Saturday morning, as floats, decorated golf carts, ponies, local businesses, and community groups made their way through the community while crowds lined the streets to cheer them on.

The Caesarea Fire Department led the parade and helped bring it safely to a close, continuing the department's longstanding support of the community event.

Despite hot temperatures, organizers said, the turnout for the parade was incredible, with the event providing a fitting start to a busy day of Regatta activities.

This year's parade was judged by Scugog Mayor Wilma Wotten, Ward Councillor Harry Wright, Regional Councillor Ian McDougall, and Member of Parliament Jacob Mantle.

Organizers extended their appreciation to everyone who participated in the parade, as well as the volunteers, who worked behind the scenes to keep the event running smoothly.

The Western Hoedown theme continued throughout the weekend, with the mechanical bull offering an opportunity for participants to test their balance and see how long they could stay in the saddle.

Once rainy weather moved into the area, on Sunday, organizers announced all remaining events were cancelled, in the interest of public safety, with the exception of the annual Pancake Breakfast.

The breakfast went ahead from 8 to 11 a.m., giving volunteers, participants, and community members an opportunity to gather and close out the weekend together, despite the cancellation of much of Sunday's programming.

Later in the day, organizers announced, the Western Hoedown Skateboard Event would still take place at 3 p.m. The community used the opportunity to come together for a special tribute to local resident Michael Tuttle, a young man who recently passed away suddenly. Before the skateboard event, organizers took a few moments to remember Michael and reflect on his passion for riding and his love of the community.

Following the tribute, riders took to the course to celebrate his memory, through the activity he loved.

The weekend's events showcased the community spirit which has helped make the Lake Scugog Regatta a longstanding summer tradition, while also demonstrating the importance of volunteers, sponsors, and community organizations to bring the event to life.

Organizers expressed their appreciation, to everyone who helped make the 96th Lake Scugog Regatta possible, including: the Caesarea Firefighters Association, volunteers, sponsors, participants, and the many residents and visitors who came out to take part.

While the weather forced an unexpected change in the final day, the 96th Lake Scugog Regatta still delivered a memorable weekend of Western-themed fun, community celebrations, and a heartfelt tribute to one of its own.
