BROCK: Mayor Walter Schummer has stepped down from his role, effective immediately, delivering his resignation in a written letter to the Township Clerk and publicly through his social media accounts, on Monday, May 26th.

In a heartfelt message to residents, through a video on his Facebook page, Mr. Schummer cited personal health concerns as the driving force behind his decision.

“The decision to resign as the Mayor of Brock is the most difficult decision of my life,” Mr. Schummer explained. “But I do so with the best interest of the municipality and my health in mind. The issues in my life have been ongoing, for some time, and it is taking a toll on me which has caused me to not be the kind of Mayor the residents of the Township expect and deserve.”

Walter Schummer, who has served as mayor since 2022, was praised for his dedication and leadership during his tenure.

“I want to thank Mayor Schummer for his years of dedication to Council, staff, and the residents of Brock,” said Chief Administrative Officer Michelle Willson. “On a more personal note, I want to thank him for his support and guidance over the past eighteen months. His kindness, patience, and advice have meant a lot to me during my transition into the CAO role.”

Ms. Willson reassured residents municipal operations will carry on.

“I also want to take this opportunity to reassure Brock residents our Leadership Team is committed to ensuring the important work of the municipality continues, uninterrupted, during this transitional period.”

Under the Province’s “strong mayor” legislation, a by-election must be held to fill the vacancy. Council is expected to formally declare the mayor’s seat vacant and pass the required by-law, during its upcoming meeting, on June 9th. A nomination period of 30 to 60 days will follow, with a by-election scheduled for 45 days thereafter. The Township anticipates a new mayor will be elected and in office sometime in September.

Until the by-election is held, Regional Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Mike Jubb will act as Chair of Council meetings and serve as Acting Mayor.

The Township has committed to keeping the public informed throughout the transition process, promising regular updates on all major decisions and key dates, as they work toward filling the vacancy.
