SCUGOG: Vets Around the Corner (VAC), a 100 percent independently and privately owned, locally rooted veterinary organization, is proud to announce the soft launch of its new Emergency Department, VAC-ED, beginning April 3rd, at 8 a.m. This new small animal service has been developed in direct response to a growing need for accessible, high-quality veterinary emergency care within the community.

VAC-ED will initially operate on a weekend schedule, open continuously from 8 a.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Monday, providing urgent care and hospitalization services for pets requiring immediate medical attention. This phased, soft launch approach allows the organization to begin addressing urgent gaps in care while continuing to expand staffing, services, and operational capacity, and will be opening during the Easter long weekend.

The launch reflects a proactive response to increasing demand for emergency veterinary services and limited availability across the region. VAC has taken a deliberate approach to quickly implement services, ensuring pet owners have access to care when it is needed most while maintaining a clear path toward future growth.

VAC-ED is designed as a regional emergency service, supporting not only Port Perry but the broader surrounding communities. The service is open to all pet owners and is not limited to existing VAC clients. As a true emergency and referral-based model, all patients seen through VAC-ED will be referred back to their primary care veterinarian for ongoing and follow-up care, ensuring continuity and collaboration within the veterinary community. Additionally, primary care veterinarians may refer patients directly to VAC-ED for hospitalization and advanced monitoring, with patients returning to their regular clinic once stabilized.

Since its founding, VAC has built a strong reputation for delivering compassionate, community-focused veterinary care. Through both clinic-based services and community outreach initiatives, the organization has prioritized accessibility, trust, and high standards of care, particularly for underserved and vulnerable populations.

The new Emergency Department will be staffed by a dedicated team of trained emergency professionals and will offer a range of critical services, including:

  • Emergency assessments and stabilization

  • Diagnostic imaging, including X-ray and ultrasound

  • Emergency surgical interventions

  • In-hospital monitoring and supportive care

This expansion represents a significant step forward in ensuring emergency veterinary care is available closer to home, reducing the need for long-distance travel during critical situations.

VAC emphasizes this is a soft launch, with ongoing efforts to expand hours toward a full 24/7 model and to broaden the scope of emergency and specialty services as the program grows. The organization asks for the community's patience and understanding as it continues to recruit, train, and expand its team and capabilities.
