BROCK: A suspicious fire in a vacant building in Cannington, on Wednesday, June 18th, has prompted a stern warning from the Brock Township Fire Department about the dangers of trespassing and playing with fire.
Firefighters were called to the scene, shortly after receiving a report of smoke coming from the structure. Upon arrival, they found evidence which led them to suspect the fire may have been intentionally set.
“This incident is particularly concerning, as we believe the building is frequently accessed by children and teenagers,” explained Madison Bath, Fire Prevention and Public Education Officer with the Brock Township Fire Department. “We want to remind everyone, actions like this are not only extremely dangerous, they’re also illegal.”
Ms. Bath stressed, while some may view entering vacant buildings or setting small fires as “harmless mischief,” the reality is far more serious.
“Fires grow and spread quickly. They can result in injury, death, or extensive property damage,” she explained. “What may seem like a prank can have lifelong consequences, including criminal charges.”
The fire department urges parents and guardians to speak with their children about the seriousness of trespassing and arson.
“We’re asking families to have honest conversations about the risks involved,” Ms. Bath stated. “For the safety of everyone in our community, do not enter vacant buildings, and never, ever play with fire.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact local authorities.
