SCUGOG: At the Township of Scugog's Planning and Community Affairs Committee meeting, on Monday, March 17th, Ahasar Syed, the planner overseeing the Township's Development Services, presented the 2024 Planning and Building Activity Report. This report detailed the significant accomplishments of Scugog’s Planning and Building Sections, throughout the year, and outlined expectations for the upcoming 2025 period.
"We've had a year of substantial growth and development, despite the challenges posed by market fluctuations and rising interest rates," Mr. Syed remarked during the meeting. "In 2024, we saw record-breaking revenue from building permits and a strong contribution from Development Charges, which continue to highlight the growth potential of our community."
One of the standout statistics from the report was the Township’s record-setting building permit revenue which surpassed $941,000. This was accompanied by the second-highest municipal Development Charges since 2018, amounting to $1.48 million for the Heron Hills subdivision. The substantial rise, in both areas, underscores a thriving residential development landscape in Scugog.
Mr. Syed also noted, Building Services had expanded in response to the increasing volume of work. "We added an Engineering Technologist and an additional Building Inspector, to help handle the rise in permit applications, inspections, and enforcement," he said. "These additions have enabled us to manage the growing demand and ensure the ongoing safety and compliance of construction projects."
Despite the strong performance, the report also highlighted challenges ahead for 2025. Mr. Syed pointed to the need for continued process streamlining and service improvements, as the Township prepares to handle an increase in both residential and industrial projects. "Next year will bring significant challenges, but we're well-prepared to tackle them through strategic planning and innovation," he added.
Planning Services also reported on a robust year, with four major subdivision agreements executed and 200 residential units processed in 2024. The department anticipates further growth in 2025, with several key projects under review, including a new community development on Reach Street. A key component of future work includes a comprehensive update to Scugog's Official Plan, set to begin in early 2025.
