BROCK: Regional priorities, ranging from housing and transit to economic development and public safety, were outlined during a recent update, delivered to Brock Township.

At council’s meeting, on Monday, March 9th, Regional Chair John Henry presented Brock councillors with the annual Regional Municipality of Durham update, offering a broad overview of major initiatives and the region’s long-term vision.

Mr. Henry highlighted the region’s 10-year strategic plan which focuses on building strong communities, supporting economic growth and ensuring regional services keep pace with population increases across Durham.

“Durham Region continues to grow, and with that growth comes both opportunity and responsibility,” said Mr. Henry. “Our strategic plan is about making sure we build communities which are connected, inclusive and sustainable for generations to come.”

Among the priorities discussed was the continued expansion and improvement of Durham Region Transit, which plays a key role in connecting residents to employment, education and services across the region.

“Transit is critical to supporting our residents and our economy,” Mr. Henry said. “As communities expand, we are committed to strengthening transit options, so people can move efficiently and reliably throughout Durham.”

Housing also remains a major focus for the region, particularly the need to ensure stable and affordable options for residents. Mr. Henry told council, Durham continues to work with municipal partners and community organizations, to increase housing supply and support residents facing housing challenges.

Another area, highlighted in the presentation, was the region’s ongoing partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, which Mr. Henry described as an important bilateral relationship, built on collaboration and mutual respect.

“Working closely with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation strengthens our entire region,” he said. “By building meaningful partnerships, we can create opportunities which benefit all of our communities.”

Economic development and business support were also discussed. Mr. Henry noted, Durham continues to position itself as a leader in innovation and sustainable energy.

Durham has earned national recognition as the Clean Energy Capital of Canada, a designation Mr. Henry said reflects the region’s leadership in energy generation and technology.

“Our region is uniquely positioned as a global leader in clean energy innovation,” he said. “Strong partnerships and bold ideas are helping shape a brighter future for residents and businesses alike.”

That forward-looking approach also contributed to Durham being named Intelligent Community of the Year, in 2025, recognizing the region’s achievements in innovation, digital connectivity and economic development.

Mr. Henry also emphasized the importance of maintaining strong frontline services, noting ongoing investments, aimed at improving policing and paramedic capacity, to keep pace with the demands of a growing population.

“We are focused on making sure our emergency services have the resources they need, to respond quickly and effectively, as our communities continue to expand,” he said.

Brock Township Mayor, Mike Jubb thanked Mr. Henry for the update and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the township and the region.

“It’s always valuable for council to hear directly about the work being done at the regional level,” said Mayor Jubb. “Brock Township benefits greatly from strong partnerships with the Region of Durham, and we appreciate the continued focus on supporting our communities and residents.”

Mr. Henry concluded by stressing, cooperation between municipalities will remain key to addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead.

“Durham’s success is built on partnership,” he said. “By working together with our local municipalities, we can continue building vibrant communities and a strong future for the entire region.”
