Region of Durham working on a bylaw regarding short-term rental properties

SCUGOG: The Region of Durham is working on a policy regarding short-term rental properties.

At a recent meeting, Regional Councillor Wilma Wotten asked for an update regarding work on a bylaw by the Region of Durham which would address the issue of short-term rental properties.

“I understand there was, a few years ago, just prior to [COVID-19], a draft which came forward to staff, and I just wonder if staff could speak to the content of that and what needs to be done at the Region to continue to move this forward as expeditiously as we can,” she said.

Scugog’s Director of Development Services, Kevin Heritage, explained a previous draft bylaw did not cover the entirety of the issue.

“The draft bylaw of two years ago was essentially a licensing bylaw. It didn’t cover zoning matters, whatsoever. What the Region is working on right now is dealing with the zoning matters,” he stated. Director Heritage added, the Region would forward the bylaw to the three North Durham municipalities of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge.
