SCUGOG: Victory in Europe (VE) Day, remains a defining moment in history. Celebrated on May 8th, 1945, it signifies the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, bringing and end to years of conflict across Europe. As news of the war's conclusion spread, jubilant celebrations erupted in cities and towns worldwide.
In Canada, VE Day has since become an opportunity to honour the bravery of those who served, and to reflect on the sacrifices made to secure peace.
Paul Breeze organized the VE celebrations held at the Port Perry Fairgrounds on Thursday, May 8. As part of the event, the Sky Hawks, the Canadian Air Force skydiving team had a dozen paratroopers descend on the fairgrounds, with Mr. Breeze and Scugog Mayor Wilma Wotten among the parachutists.
The festivities around the 80th anniversary of VE Day included face painting, a photo booth, performances by the Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada, as well as the Uxbridge Legion Pipes and Drums, and military vehicles on display from the Canadian Tank Museum, in Oshawa. Members of the 41 Port Perry Royal Canadian Army Cadets and the 76 Uxbridge Royal Canadian Army Cadets also participated in the community event, which drew a fantastic crowd to the fairgrounds.
